My poc social justice blogger pal who’s really into equality and rights for all was trying to tell me that white people are the worst kinds of racists, and that “some racism is worse than others- racism from white people is the worst kind”. I told her to back up her assertions with evidence and she went silent, however, she later proceeded to say it is always okay for black people to be racist to white people, because they were slaves once. She said this to an Irish person.
I tried telling her about the times I was treated poorly because of my race, and she dismissed it.
What do I know? White people are never the subjects of racism according to her, and we’re also the only ones ‘white-washing’ women in magazines. Japan and India don’t do it, only white people.
Welp.
…The person who submitted this sounds like a Social Justice Sally themselves.
I’m not saying I agree with everything your friend is saying, but you’ve gotta think more deeply.
White people cannot experience racism because racism is an institution that benefits white people. If she says the worst kind of racism comes from white people, it’s because white people run the institution of racism. I myself think all racism and prejudice is bad equally, but they are NOT comparable. Black people CANNOT be racist to white people, because racism is prejudice + power. Black people and any other race can be PREJUDICE towards white people, and while that is wrong, they cannot force white people to feel institutionalized racism the same way POC feel it.
It sounds like when she said black people were slaves once, you dismissed it like that wasn’t relevant, then you proceed to bring up your Irish heritage and what the Irish went through in the past. A little hypocritical. Don’t bring up one part of the past then dismiss another part. Besides, while the racism against the Irish was wrong, it CANNOT be compared to the racism against black people. It just can’t be.
If you’re white, then what you experienced was prejudice, not racism. And while it wasn’t right she dismissed you because it wasn’t the same thing.
White washing is done in magazines because of the standard white society has brought up. The institution of racism declared white skin = pretty skin. That’s why you see ads in India where the models are made lighter or are light skinned, because society has declared that light skin is best.
I’m black and I disagree with you. I do not believe Racism is power + prejudice. It’s just prejudice towards another race. I don’t care if that’s how the word originated. Originally rape was defined as a crime from man towards a woman. I roll my eyes every time I read how “black people can’t be racist to white people because they don’t have the power too.” So if a white, middle classed man kills a poor black person just because of their skin color, that is racism, but if a middle class black man kills a poor white person because of the color of their skin, it’s not racism because they have bo power over that white person?
If a business run by black people refuses to give service to a white person just because their white, that’s not racism because the black people have no power in that situation? It makes no sense to me. Because there are white people that can do something with their racism other than be hateful, that means it has to be different for anybody else? I’ve seen A LOT of white people on tumblr who have come to hate themselves and white people in general just because of their skin color. Whenever a non-white person says how evil white people can be, the have convinced themselves that they have to agree 150%. Tumblr has shown that a lot of people can be convinced to be believe something once the read the posts and see them often.
As for the claim “while the racism against the Irish was wrong, it CANNOT be compared to the racism against black people. It just can’t be.” No, just no. If a person kills a child for whatever horrible purpose, are you going to say that they’re not such a bad person because another person has killed 3 kids? An evil act is an evil act. Quantity doesn’t matter here/ Just because more has been done to one group doesn’t mean the other’s plight shown mean nothing in comparison.
I’m really starting to think people on tumblr think all black people in America (except celebrities) are struggling to make a living and fighting of racist bigots every day. I’m NOT saying that that isn’t the case for a number of black people, but you know what? I have lived a great life and have yet to face racism. Please don’t twist my words to make it sound like I’m saying racism doesn’t exist anymore. That’s not what I mean. My point is not every white person is a damn racist nor has inherent racism.
Tumblr has turned people, or at least brought, the unintentional bigots so many people. It’s crazy. I have a feeling I didn’t convince you of anything. I’m probably the “uneducated idiot” to you. I’m done. If you want to disagree go ahead. The same goes to anybody else reading this. You can give me all the info you want about how I’m wrong, I’ve heard them all a dozen times and I won’t change my stance. I don’t give a dam of I lose followers for this, I stand by my beliefs.
End rant Sorry if I came off a bit rude, I will say that. Rremember people: Everybody is a little bit racist :D
